Enough To Stand OnPsalm 73:26

Four Words Is Still a Prayer

This message is for the four words that are all the prayer I have left, and the fear that four words is not enough to be a faith

The bread came round the table to him, and he stood up, because in that house the one who blesses the bread stands.

It was his mother's front room on a Friday evening. The low table. The blue shutters that have never closed properly. Hot oil and za'atar coming through from the kitchen, and eleven people folded in around a table built for eight. Rami had not sat in that seat for four years. Nobody had. His sister had kept it empty the way you keep a light on in a hallway.

He used to pray over bread for six minutes. He had a line for the harvest and a line for the ones who were not at the table and a long one he had learned off his grandfather, and there was a whole stretch of his life when he could have told you exactly what he was, with a word for it, and the word had a history behind it and a shelf of books behind that.

He could not have told you now. The words that named him went first. Then the ones he used to argue with went. Then, quietly, over about a year, the long ones he used to pray. He had checked for them the way you check a pocket you already know is empty. Some nights he checked twice.

His sister put the loaf into his hands, warm through the cloth. Hands opened all the way round the table. His niece, who is nine, shut her eyes so hard her whole face creased.

And what came up out of him was four words.

"God. This is Yours."

That was the whole of it. There was nothing standing behind it. He heard how small it was in that room, four words where six minutes used to be, and the thought arrived with a kind of terror that had been waiting years for a room this quiet: that is not a faith. That is a scrap.

His mother said amen. The bread went round. His brother in law started talking about the car.

And Rami stayed on his feet a second longer than he needed to, one hand on the back of the chair, because something was holding him up, and it was very plainly not the amount he had brought.

You know that seat. Maybe not that room, but you know the moment when the thing is handed to you, and everybody's hands are open, and you find out in public exactly how much of it is left. You know the checking, too. The pocket. Twice.

And you know the sentence that comes after it, because it is the one you carry into every quiet room: there is not enough of this left to be a faith.

Four Words Is Still a Prayer

The part of it that was never yours to lose

Let me say one thing plainly at the start, so you are not braced for it the whole way through.

I am not here to build it back. I will not tell you that what you had comes back the size it was, because that is not mine to say, and a sentence like that has already been said over you by people who meant it and could not keep it. What I have to put in your hands instead is not my promise. It is what is written, which has stood for three thousand years without anybody having to hold it up, and the Holy Spirit, who is already in the room where you are sitting.

I want to do something smaller and much better. I want to show you the ground. Scripture has been holding it out in plain sight the whole time, and getting a person's weight down onto it is the work of His Spirit, in rooms far quieter than this one.

Once, some men who had walked with Jesus for months came to Him with the request you have made a hundred times in the car with the radio off. Increase our faith. Add more to us. Top it up, because what is here does not feel like it would hold anything.

He did not increase it. Watch what He never once concedes:

If you had faith like a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, be uprooted and be planted in the sea, and it would obey you.Luke 17:6

Read what He did there, because it is one of the kindest sidesteps in the Gospels. They asked Him about volume. He answered by pointing at the smallest seed in the jar, the one that gets lost in the seam of your palm. He never agreed that the amount was the problem. He moved the whole question off the size of it, and He never once moved it back.

Now here is where the ground actually is.

There is a psalm written by a man whose certainty came apart in his hands, who says so, at length, with no varnish on it. And in the middle of it he says the quiet part out loud.

My flesh and my heart give out, but God is the rock of my heart and my portion forever.Psalm 73:26

He does not argue with the failing. He states it flatly and Scripture lets it stand there: the heart gives out. That is in the Book. What has happened to you is not a scandal in there.

But watch where the sentence goes. The part of him that failed and the part of him that holds him up are not the same part. His heart gave out. The rock did not, because the rock was never his heart. It was God. And God was his portion, and a portion is not something a person generates. A portion is something handed to you at a table.

There is a law about olive trees that has been in the Book for three thousand years, and it is one of the tenderest things in the whole of it.

When you beat your olive tree, you shall not go over the branches again. It is for the stranger, the orphan, and the widow.Deuteronomy 24:20

Whatever is left up in the top of the tree when the beating is finished is not a leftover. Nobody forgot it. It is a portion, assigned before anyone came up the hill, and it is enough for the one who arrives with an empty basket. I am not telling you that God went through your branches. I am telling you how He treats what is still on them, because He wrote it down.

And He wrote this down as well.

A bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not snuff out.Isaiah 42:3

Notice what is not in that sentence. It does not say the wick flares back up. It does not set a condition, burn brighter first and then we will talk. It says what He does with it, and what He does is refuse to put it out. Everything about you that has gone thin has gone thin in the hands of the one Person in the universe who does not put thin things out.

One more, and then I will stop and let you stand.

The solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: the Lord knows those who are His.2 Timothy 2:19

A seal is pressed into the stone by the owner, from the owner's side. So read whose knowing that is. It does not say those who are His know Him well enough. It says the Lord knows those who are His. The certainty in that sentence belongs to Him, and it was never stored in your grip, which is why it did not leave with everything else that left.

Four words, said standing, by a man who could no longer have told you what to call himself, are set down on that.

The breakthrough

Here is the moment, and nothing is going to be added to you in it.

Everything in you has been waiting for the refill. You have been holding out for the day you feel the way you felt before, on the grounds that you would then have something worth standing on. That wait has no floor in it, because the feeling was never the floor.

What is here right now is not more. It is the discovery that the thing under your feet has been load bearing this entire time, all through the years you spent checking the pocket, all through the seasons you could not name yourself. Rami's four words did not hold him up at that table. The floor did. The four words were only how he found out he was on it. And that is not my reading of it. Psalm 73:26 puts the rock outside the heart that gave out, and it is His Spirit, and not the size of the prayer, who is standing you on it while you read.

So the receiving is this. You stop weighing what you have, and you put your weight down on what He sealed. That is not a small exchange. It is the whole distance between a faith you are auditing and a faith you are standing in.

Declare this over yourself

You do not say these because you have worked your way back up to them. Every line under this heading is His word handed back to Him, and it is His Spirit who carries it, never the sound of your voice in the room. You say them because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the right to speak like this is yours on His account, never on the strength of what is left in your hands. And you say them under not my will, but Thine. He may answer in His own way and in His timing, and however He answers, the ground beneath your feet is the same ground. Out loud, standing.

  1. Fear, you do not get to weigh my faith on your scale, so get out of my mouth. The Word of God says my heart gives out but God is the rock of my heart and my portion forever, so the part of me that failed was never the part holding me up. In the name of Jesus, the four words I have left are prayer, and they are heard.
  2. Small measure, you are the very seed Jesus named, and He named you enough. When they asked Him for more faith He pointed them at a mustard seed, therefore what is left in my hand today is a portion, and a portion is what a person eats from. I take it, and I stand on it with both feet.
  3. Lord Jesus, Your foundation stands, and Scripture says You know those who are Yours. That seal was cut on Your side of the stone and not on mine. In Your name I am standing on what is left, and what is left is holding.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
