Nothing To Call ItIsaiah 43:1

The Answer Your Father Understood

This message is for the answer you gave your father in his own language about what you were, which you cannot give your own son over tea on a Friday night

At ten past nine on a Friday night the kettle has boiled twice, and Ibrahim is on the second pot, because his son came home.

Sami is nineteen, back from his first year away. He has eaten enough for three people and is now sitting sideways in the chair with one leg hooked over the arm of it, the way he has sat since he was small. The good glasses are out. The narrow ones with the gold rim that only come down off the shelf when somebody who matters is in the house. Cardamom in the pot, because Sami likes it and Ibrahim does not, and that has been the arrangement for nineteen years.

Sami turns his glass slowly on the table and says, with no weight on it at all, "Baba. What are we?"

He is not starting anything. Somebody at university asked him, he had nothing to say back, and it has been sitting in his pocket for a month.

And Ibrahim, who has answered harder questions than this one in two languages, opens his mouth and finds nothing in it.

Because he can see the other table. He is twenty two and it is his father's house, and the table is low, and there is bread and white cheese and a dish of olives with the oil pooling around them, and his father, who never wasted a word in his life, asks him the same question with his eyes half closed.

And he gives one word back. One. The word his father would know.

His father looks at him for a moment. Then he reaches over and fills his son's glass to the top and says nothing else, because nothing else is needed. That was the whole conversation. It took four seconds and it held for thirty years.

Tonight the word is in the room and Ibrahim will not pick it up.

Not because it stopped being true. Because of what has attached itself to it since. It has a building on it now. It has a man in a doorway who said a sentence to his wife that Ibrahim can still hear in the car sometimes. It has one Sunday in March that this family does not discuss. If he lays that word on this table, he hands his son all of it in one piece, with no way on earth to get the thing apart from what stuck to it.

So he says, "We believe in God."

And Sami, who is nineteen and not stupid, says, "Yeah, I know that. But what are we?"

And Ibrahim says, "Drink it while it is hot."

His son laughs and lets him off and moves on to a story about a lecturer, and that is worse than an argument would have been.

Later the house goes quiet. Sami is upstairs laughing at a screen, the laugh coming down through the ceiling. Ibrahim stands at the sink washing the good glasses by hand because they do not go in the machine, and he prays for his son the way he has prayed since he was nine years old, plainly, in his mother's language, with the tap running.

He has no word for himself.

He has not stopped for a single day.

The Answer Your Father Understood

What your father actually heard

There is an easy thing to do at this point in a message like this one. I will not do it. The easy thing is to hand you a fresh word. Something clean, nothing stuck to it yet, try it on, see how it sits. In four years that one will have collected a building and a doorway and a March of its own, and you will be standing at another sink with another son upstairs. And nobody here is asking you what happened, either. You do not owe me the story, and a man should not have to produce his evidence before he is allowed to believe.

I want to take you back to the low table with the olives on it, and show you what your father actually heard.

He did not hear a category. Watch him. He asks no follow up question. He does not check your answer against anything, he does not say ah, then you must think such and such about this or that. He fills your glass. That is a man receiving a person, not a man filing a classification. The word was only the door your answer walked in through. Your father was never in love with the door.

And here I have to stop describing and turn and speak to you, because you are His, and that was settled long before you had any vocabulary to lay on it. This is not my idea placed over your kitchen. It is what the Lord says in Isaiah 43:1 through the prophet, that He formed you and redeemed you and called you by your name, and the Holy Spirit who put that line in Scripture is the same Spirit standing in the room with you while you read it.

But now, this is what the LORD says, the One who created you, and the One who formed you: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine.Isaiah 43:1

Read what He does not say. He does not say I have called you by your affiliation. Not by the word you write in the box, not by the room you used to sit in on a Sunday, not by the people you sat beside there. He says your name. The one thing about you that had not changed at your father's low table and has not changed since the March nobody in your house discusses.

You have been called by name, and you carry it right now, tonight, at the sink with the tap running over your wrists. His word says the Shepherd calls His own by name and they know His voice, and it is His Spirit who keeps that voice recognizable in a kitchen where nobody else is awake. A name is not a label. A label is what a stranger reads off you at a distance. A name is what somebody who loves you says quietly at the door.

Now let me name the thing that frightened you at that table, because it has been sitting in the chair since you told him to drink it while it was hot. You think the chain stopped with you. Your father passed you something in one word, and you could not pass anything at all to your boy, and so you have quietly decided that whatever came down through your family for a hundred years ends in your kitchen on a Friday.

It does not end there. Look at what came out of you when the boy went upstairs. You prayed for him. Nobody made you, nobody saw it, there was no room and no service and no name for you, and the tap was running so hard you could barely hear your own voice. You are a man who prays for his son with the vocabulary gone, and Romans 8:16 says the Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, which means the witness at that sink was never manufactured by how sure you felt about a word.

And your son did hear something, just not the thing he asked for. He heard a father who would not hand him damaged goods simply to have an answer ready by nine o'clock. Most nineteen year olds have never once been shown that kind of care at a table. You have given him more than a category, and what is written says to train up a child in the way he should go, and a way is a road walked, not a name recited, and the Spirit drawing that boy is not sitting around waiting on your vocabulary to recover.

The breakthrough

So here is what to do with the question your son asked, and it is smaller than it looks from where you sit.

You do not have to answer it tonight. You also do not have to fill the silence with a word you no longer trust in your own mouth. There is one sentence left standing that is entirely true, that has nothing stuck to it, and that your father would have recognized instantly across the olives.

I believe.

Two words. Nothing after them. No qualifier, no which kind, no half sentence explaining that it is complicated now.

It is going to feel far too small for a man of your age. It is not too small. This is yours right now, and it is the shortest form of the oldest thing there is: Scripture records a father in Mark 9 who said barely more than that in front of a crowd and went home with everything, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying those two words out of your mouth tonight, not your confidence in them.

And when Sami asks again, and a boy like that asks again, you have something honest to put on the table. I believe Him. I have no word for it that I would give you, and I am not handing you one that would cut your hands later. That is not a failure of nerve in a father. That is a man keeping the thing and refusing to pass on the wreckage around it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, slowly, standing where you were standing. None of this rests on you finding the right term for yourself. Your standing is yours in Christ, given to you and never earned by vocabulary, and what makes an old written line live in a quiet kitchen at midnight is the Holy Spirit, never the wording. Say them plainly and leave the outcome with Him, because the outcome is His and He answers as He sees fit.

  1. Word I could not hand my son, you were the door and never the house, and you have no authority at this table. In the name of Jesus I am still holding the thing my father heard, because Isaiah 43:1 says the Lord who formed me has called me by my name and I am His.
  2. Shame that says I gave him nothing, you are dismissed from this kitchen in the name of Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is the one saying it and not me. Scripture says I am redeemed and called by name, and a man God knows by name has something to give his children that no vocabulary was ever carrying.
  3. Father, You called me by my name before I had one word for myself, and You have never once needed me to spell it. Tonight I am saying I believe out loud at the sink with the glasses drying, and I am adding nothing after it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
