The Short Answer1 John 5:1

What You Nearly Unloaded At The Stall

This message is for the woman at the market stall who asked which church, and the twenty years of story you nearly unloaded onto her before you stopped

Ten past nine on a Saturday, and the market is still waking up. Wet cardboard, a hose running somewhere behind the fish counter, a radio on a shelf playing something with too much bass for the hour.

The stall is the third one down. Blue and white striped awning, folding table, and a set of brass scales with the green paint chipped off one pan, which she has never replaced because they are her mother's and they weigh true.

He goes there every week for the plums. She always talks. That is the arrangement, and both of them like it.

This particular Saturday she is putting six in the paper bag and she says, without looking up, in the same voice she uses for the weather, "So which church you at?"

Four words. No weight on them at all. She is making conversation over a bag of fruit.

And in the second and a half before he answers, the whole thing comes up his throat like a tide.

The split. The letter. The elder who called on a Wednesday evening and used the word disappointed twice. The year he did not go anywhere and told his mother he was going somewhere. The doctrine he could once argue for two hours and now cannot say out loud without hearing his own voice go thin. The friend of nineteen years who stopped replying. The two other places he tried, one too loud and one too careful, and the Sunday he sat in the car park of the second one for forty minutes and then drove home.

He has the whole thing loaded. It is standing right behind his teeth. He can feel the shape of the first sentence already, and the first sentence is always the same sentence: well, it's complicated, see, what happened was.

And he stops.

He does not know why he stops. He will think about it later, driving. But standing there, with the paper bag half full and her hand on the brass pan, he simply closes his mouth on twenty years and opens it again on three words.

"I believe Him."

That is all he says.

She says, "Good. Good," in the voice of a woman who has heard everything and been surprised by very little, and she puts a seventh plum in the bag because she likes him, and she counts twenty pence into his palm, warm from her apron pocket.

He is at the car before his hands stop shaking. Not because it went badly. Because it went nowhere at all. Because he had a defense prepared for a courtroom and what he walked into was a woman weighing fruit, and the three words were the whole of what was wanted, and nothing fell over.

What You Nearly Unloaded At The Stall

The counter and the workbench

Let us go slowly with this. I think it has been carried a long way, and there is no rush in this room.

There is a difference between a counter and a workbench, and almost everything that hurt you at that stall comes from the two of them getting mixed up.

A workbench is where you take a thing apart. It is where you keep the good tools, the reading, the arguments you have honestly worked through, the questions you are still turning over at half past eleven at night. A workbench is holy ground. Nobody here is going to tell you that doctrine does not matter, or that thinking hard about God is a phase you should grow out of. Keep the bench. Keep working it. The command to love Him with all your mind is written down in Mark 12:30 and it has never been withdrawn, and a bench like that is lit by His Spirit, who sits up late at it with you.

But a counter is not a workbench. A counter is where somebody weighs something and hands it over. When a woman with brass scales asks you a friendly question over a bag of plums, she has put a counter in front of you, and you nearly set your entire workshop down on it.

Here is what is already true about you, and I am not making it up as encouragement. You are born of God, and the hinge that swung that door was belief in His Son, not the length of your account of yourself. Scripture puts it flat in 1 John 5:1: whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. Born. Not applying, not on probation, not pending a fuller statement. He said that once, and His Spirit has never stopped saying it, which is how an old sentence lands on you at ten past nine on a Saturday with plum juice on your thumb.

Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.1 John 5:1

Notice what the verse does not require of you. It does not ask for a summary of the last two decades. It does not ask which building, which stream, which side of which argument. It names one thing and it hangs everything on it, and the thing it names is the thing you still have.

You have the hinge. That is why the three words held. Not because they were clever and not because you were brave that morning, but because they were true, and truth does not need volume to bear weight. His word carries it and His Spirit backs it, and neither of them was waiting for the rest of your story before deciding about you.

Now hear the part that most people skip past.

The short answer is enough. It is not complete. Those are two different sentences and both of them are kind. Enough means it holds, it is honest, it can be handed over at a counter without collapsing, it satisfies the question actually asked. Complete would mean there is nothing left to learn, and there is a great deal left to learn, for you and for me and for everybody who ever loved Him. Keep reading. Keep asking. Keep the bench.

What you were doing before you stopped was trying to make a counter answer complete, and no counter answer ever can be, which is why it kept growing until it was twenty years long and could not be lifted.

And there is one more thing in that tide worth naming, because it was in there with the rest. Somewhere in those twenty years you picked up the idea that a small answer is a dishonest one. That if you do not say all of it you are hiding. That is not conviction; that is the residue of a season when every sentence you said about God was being marked. You were set free from that courtroom, and the freedom is already yours, bought and delivered, because the word says there is no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and it is His Spirit and not your explanation that testifies you belong to Him.

The breakthrough

So the turn is this, and it is a relief rather than a task.

You do not owe anybody your twenty years. You never did. Not the woman at the stall, not the neighbor, not the man at work who asks in that slightly amused way, not your own mother.

What you have is a true sentence, short enough to carry in your mouth, and it is already sufficient at every counter you will stand at. This is yours right now, not something to earn back: the word says you are born of God through believing on His Son, and His Spirit seals that and quietly steadies your voice when somebody asks over a bag of fruit.

And the rest is not lost. It is on the bench where it belongs, and you can go on working it for the next forty years with joy. God settles the outcome of every one of those conversations in His own way, and He is not grading your brevity.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these out loud where you are. Nothing is being manufactured here. You are born of God already, and that standing was given to you in Christ and is held by Him, so the authority in these lines is His authority, not the strength of your voice, and what is written is carried by His Spirit, never by the sound of your voice saying it. Leave the outcome with Him. He answers as He chooses, in His own timing, and no conversation at any counter changes what He has already settled.

  1. Twenty years of story, you are not the entrance fee to a bag of plums. You go on the bench where I can work you, and you do not go on the counter. Scripture hangs my whole standing on believing that Jesus is the Christ, and that is the sentence I am handing over.
  2. Fear that a short answer makes me a liar, you have no weight on these scales. In the name of Jesus, get out of my throat before the next question comes. The Holy Spirit testifies that I belong to Him, and He has never once needed my full account to do it.
  3. Lord, You called it being born of You, and You hung it on one thing, and I have that one thing in my mouth this morning. Your Spirit steadies me at every counter I stand at, and I am done rehearsing the long version. I believe You, and that is the whole answer.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
